Placencia International Airport to Break Ground
For decades, Belize was able to support only one international airport, the Philip Goldson International Airport, located just outside Belize City. For a country the size of New Jersey, this single intercontinental airport made sense. A handful of local airports in Belize support only domestic flights, like the one in Placencia that currently has one runway. But not for much longer. Plans for the Placencia International Airport (PIA) are underway, and it will support flights from North and South America as well as Europe.
Rise of Placencia International Airport
Placencia, Belize is moving up on the list for ideal getaways, bringing in 13 percent more overnight guests in 2016 compared to the previous year. The Belize Tourism Board accounted for approximately 340,000 guests, not counting those who stepped off cruise boats for daytime excursions. The year 2017 saw continuous growth, which gave rise to the plans for Placencia International Airport.
The plans include a 9,200-ft runway that can accommodate commercial aircraft, like 777s and Airbus. There are also public and private hangars on the blueprint. Inside, passengers can find conveniences like streamlined customs and immigration clearance and fully operating restaurants, comfortable lounges, and a casino.
Real estate owners can take advantage of private flights, supported by the VIP Fixed Base Operator (FBO) for superior service.
Placencia International Airport is coming at a time when tourist arrivals are becoming more frequent. Placencia can offer guests adventure, relaxation, easy travel, a welcoming culture, and luxury resorts. Here are just a few of the natural draws to southern Belize:
- Belize Barrier Reef. A self-sustaining coral reef system, stretching 180 miles. It’s one of the largest ecosystems on the planet, supporting more than 500 species of fish.
- Ancient Maya Sites. Ruins from the Maya civilization anchor the rich culture throughout Belize, with locations like Nim Li Punit close to Placencia.
- Tropical weather. Average temperatures range between 75 and 80 degrees along the coast. The off-season brings fresh rains and reduced hotel prices.
Belize is an easy place to spend retirement for many expats due to its favorable weather, simple living and English-speaking population. Real estate investors buying in Belize, from all over the globe, enjoy the simple purchasing process. The market in Placencia is gaining momentum, but list prices are still low enough that investors can buy, hold and turn a profit almost immediately.
The Placencia International Airport is the next logical step forward for the growing Belize economy. The demand from international travelers is there and will continue to increase as airport construction is set to finish in 2022.
